Today the Washington Environmental Council held a protest, with Green Peace, to protest the drilling of the Arctic. With so many other renewable energy sources out there it's time we start fighting for these sources with vigor. Honestly, I had thought of Arctic drilling as something of a permanence but with the presence of this massive rig in the sound it's in our face how destructive this is.
I was lead to believe that Shell would be drilling in the Puget Sound. I have also heard that these massive rigs are only here to "rest" and will late be moved to the Arctic for drilling. Regardless, after going to Jack Block Park and seeing the rig first hand, I know that it is wrong. I've heard all the arguments for oil drilling, such as our major plastic dependence int he country, but just because it's the norm doesn't mean it's okay! Plastic only became a complete dependence about 60 years ago! The oil rig is massive, bumps against the land, and I wonder if it has any oil on that is already getting into our water. I wonder, why now? Why must this oil rig, or any others, be put in the sound?

Here's how you can protest Arctic Drilling:
- Write letters, emails, and CALL your local representative to tell them how important it is to you! I found that their interns actually tally each topic that people contact them and will summize what they people find most important and they'll focus on those issues!
- Get involved in an organization that CARES. I'm involved with the Washington Environmental Council and working on volunteering for them (applied and waiting...)
- Educate others through discussion so that more people care! I'm not educated at all on oil but just found out that there is a 75% risk for an oil spill when there are oil rigs involved! When we all are talking about it, things will change!
