My freshman year of college I gained weight. My second year of college, I gained even more weight. All of it was because of an inactive lifestyle and diet. My freshman year I hated our 1 cafeteria and I lived off of french fries and whatever fried good they had. It was the south, and I lived in running shorts and baggy shirts. My second year, I went abroad and partied all too often and never turned down a new food. While this made for a great experience, it also made for weight gain.
When I came back I realized that I had gained weight but I still felt pretty good about my body shape. I had a boy who was attracted to me and I thought I was hot. I was also depressed during that time. So despite all my best efforts to eat healthier and I tried working out, I still wasn't changing my body. My ultimate turning point was when I went jeans shopping, every woman's nightmare, and found that I couldn't fit into the largest size of HM jeans.
Last year, I restarted my sophomore year of college and wanted to get healthy. I wanted to be a good role model for my nieces and nephew and even my sisters who also struggled with their weight and body image. In January I did a Blogilates "DietBet" and for the next month I followed her diet plan religiously and did the workouts and discovered the joys of Zumba. I lost about 7lbs. In total in about a year, I lost about 20lbs.
Now that I'm vegan, my body is changing again. I'm hungry all the time but also get full really quickly. I've become more active since I started my coaching job as well. After a big meal, I weighed 2lbs less than when I weighed myself after the DietBet.
I never really thought I had made that big of a difference in my body until I found my old measurements at my room at home. I lost 1.5" off my waist, 3.5" off each thigh, 2" off my love handles, and 2" off my hips. I am so proud of myself! It was a long journey but it proves to myself that has all been worth it. I'm incredibly surprised about my thighs, considering they have always been a focus of my insecurities.
Now I'm "dieting" for the pageant, in an effort to get that stage body and I'm curious to see what I can do with continued perseverance and listening to my body. The good news is that being vegan means I don't have to focus too much on eating. I'm just going to try and add more fruits and vegetables into my diet and less processed sugars! Nothing too crazy!
